ODIN evaluates data based on two main dimensions:

  1. Coverage – refers to the availability of key statistical indicators across 22 data categories such as health, education, environment, and gender.
  2. Openness fees to accessibility, usability, and adherence to open data standards.

Key Features:

  • Covers 197 countries ins the 2024/2025 edition
  • ODIN reveals disparities between countries in data openness and coverage, highlighting areas needing improvement.
  • Users can explore interactive dashboards, compare countries, and download datasets to support research and monitoring efforts.
  • Policymakers, donors, and advocacy groups can track progress toward SDG data commitments and allocate resources strategically.

Why this Matters for Gender Data

ODIN 2024/25 finds that gender data are improving globally, with notable gains in categories like reproductive health (+8.5 points), health facilities (+6.5), and gender statistics (+4.1). More governments are publishing sex-disaggregated data and building the foundation for inclusive, evidence-based policymaking.

But these gains remain fragile. Many of the most significant advances are underpinned by data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) – a program now at risk. Of the 24 ODIN indicators sourced from DHS, 19 are gender data indicators, including all those in the reproductive health category. The loss of DHS data puts essential statistics on maternal health, contraceptive use, education, and more in jeopardy across 70+ low- and middle-income countries.

ODIN 2024/25 shows us what’s possible with investments in gender data:

  • A 12.5% global increase in ODIN scores—the largest ever recorded
  • Over 80% of countries improved their data openness and coverage
  • Gains in Africa (23%) and Oceania (19%), with some of the biggest improvements in Central and Western Africa
  • Rising gender data coverage—but persistent gaps remain, especially in food security, education, and justice
