Inclusion of Gender Diversity in Gender Equality Efforts: Focus on CRVS & Legal ID

November 19th 12:30 pm GMT +7

Bangkok, Thailand, Theatre, Ground Floor, UNCC, a hybrid event

A side event of the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on the Beijing+30 Review

Co-hosted by the Gender Equity Unit and Global Health Advocacy Incubator as part of the Data for Health Initiative

Description:

Gender equality efforts have been focused on women and girls since Beijing, as women and girls are the largest group of individuals facing systemic and structural inequalities. During this side event, we will use CRVS and legal identity as an entry point for discussion on how to include gender diverse people in gender equality efforts moving forward.

Access to civil and identity registration is vitally important for all people because these systems provide legal identity documentation. This documentation is essential for the exercise of human rights and to benefit from and access services, including education, voting, and healthcare. Gender diverse people face difficulties, if not complete exclusion, from these registration systems.

Despite this, everyone is entitled to have their gender identity reflected in their legal identity. Universal legal identity is covered under SDG target 16.9, provide legal identity for all. It unlocks other SDGs and is a basic human right. People who are gender diverse face particular challenges in accessing civil registration services and obtaining gender-aligned identity documents. To date, most countries only include two options for sex and gender on legal identity documents – male and female – and do not provide for changing sex and gender in civil registries and on identity documents.

Join us for an interactive discussion to solve for the question, "How can we provide universal legal identity that includes people who are gender diverse?"
