Liesl Nydegger is a social scientist and an assistant professor in the Department of Health, Behavior & Society at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research focuses on individual, social, and structural factors that impact sexual health to develop programs using a syndemic framework to reduce health disparities and improve sexual health among populations with intersectional identities. She has 15 years of experience studying HIV prevention among women and sexual and gender minorities to develop multi-level programs addressing inequities such as intimate partner violence, healthcare access, and discrimination in healthcare. Dr. Nydegger has worked in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asian, and multiple cities across the U.S. to understand and mitigate HIV and intimate partner violence with support of the NIH and internal funding. Liesl has published her work in international and national journals in the fields of public health, sexual health, racial/ethnic disparities, social work, behavioral health, and social science. She mentors students, particularly underrepresented minority (URM) students pursuing careers in health equity, gender equity, HIV, and sexual and reproductive health. Dr. Nydegger earned her PhD in health behavior sciences with a concentration in global health from Claremont Graduate University. Outside of work, she is a dog- and cat-mom and enjoys traveling to learn about different cultures, try new food, and enjoy the spectacular beauty of each country.
